What is Palliative Care?
The Palliative Care Program at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital helps terminally ill patients and their loved ones deal with the physical, psychological and spiritual problems associated with death and bereavement. A specially trained team of physicians, nurses, spiritual advisors and volunteers provides services and care second to none on Vancouver Island.
History of Palliative Care at NRGH
The unit relocated to its present location on the hospital’s ground floor in 2005, expanding from six beds to twelve.
The renovated unit will permit privacy and dignity in a calm, peaceful space. Some of the features include: more private rooms; better air circulation; a large, modern kitchen, so families can make meals and snacks; and specialized equipment to enhance patient comfort. Home-like furnishings will soften the stark clinical atmosphere.
The renovations, beginning late this autumn, are scheduled for completion by September of 2008. Approximately 1,000 palliative care patients and their families yearly will benefit from upgraded facilities.

The need for palliative care services continues to grow. People of all ages, from all walks of life, seek a tranquil place where they can share quality time, at life’s end, with those who are important to them.
